Andy began experimenting with light painting in July 2004. He’d seen examples of the technique but wasn’t familiar with the term at that time. He was watching the film Koyaanisqatsi almost daily during that period, which features night time lapses of highway interchanges.

Much of the year was spent testing self-constructed LED subjects of various materials / situations / distances. Dozens of sessions and thousands of shots later, Andy began to gravitate toward close-up and macro scenes, manipulating the LED from out of frame.

This is probably the earliest example of said technique that I’m proud of. The LED traveled in a wobbly figure-eight motion that achieved the twisting 3D effect. Even though I have some issues with it today, I still think it looks cool.
